Gary Francis Horton, 68, beloved husband, father, son and grandfather, passed away suddenly Sept. 30 at Platte County Memorial Hospital in Wheatland.
Gary was born May 9, 1945, in Laramie, the son of Bernard and Betty (Wessel) Horton. His family later moved to Cheyenne, where he graduated from East High.
Gary served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, where he flew 103 missions as an intelligence gatherer. Following his tour of duty, he returned to Wyoming and completed his degree in journalism at the University of Wyoming.
Gary held various reporting and editing positions in Sheridan, Worland and Cheyenne. Later, he served as a technical editor for environmental projects throughout the world, including eight years spent in Egypt.
During Gary’s retirement, his kindness, generosity and sense of humor were instrumental in providing foster homes for many homeless dogs, who were then adopted into loving forever homes.
Gary is survived by his wife of 42 years, Deborah (Riddle); sons, David (Macinda) and Richard; three lovely grandchildren; mother, Betty Horton; and numerous loving cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bernard Horton; and his grandparents.
